Green Heron

07/17/20.

Kim Alexander of Avon sent this photo of a Green Heron gathering twigs to build a nest. Jay Kaplan, director of Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton, writes “While many people are familiar with the Great Blue Heron that nests in rookeries in a few locations around the Farmington Valley, not as many know about its smaller relative, the Green Heron. These herons are “crepuscular,” meaning they are most active at dusk and dawn. They can be found in low-lying wetland areas and along the banks of the Farmington River.”
